You may experience varying levels of pain and nausea for the first 2 hours after sleeve gastrectomy. Strong pain relieving and nausea reducing medications will be used. You will not take anything by mouth in this early period. At about the 2nd hour, you will be able to stand up and go to the toilet with the help of the staff. Walking will further reduce pain and nausea. The pain may decrease during the first night, this varies a lot from person to person. Nausea may be due to the effect of anesthesia in the first hours. In some people, it may continue intermittently during the night. But in most patients, nausea is almost non-existent the next day.
