As Ramadan approaches, one of the most frequently asked questions after sleeve gastrectomy surgery is “Can I fast?”
When Can I Fast After Obesity Surgery?
With sleeve gastrectomy surgery, there is a serious decrease in the amount of food consumed in one meal. In the first 3-4 months, some of our patients may have difficulty even drinking water. Considering these situations, we do not recommend fasting within the first year.
After 1 year, it will be much more beneficial for you to fast in consultation with your dietician or doctor. Because the increase in portions of each person after sleeve gastrectomy surgery may vary. Even after 1 year, if the portions are still small, it would be a much more correct behavior to postpone fasting.
It is very important for individuals who have undergone sleeve gastrectomy surgery to have meals every 3-4 hours for adequate nutrient intake and water consumption. While fasting, we may face situations such as not getting enough nutrients or dehydration because the whole day will pass without water and food. Especially during summer fasts, the time available for eating and drinking water is very short, so we need to pay more attention to our food and water consumption during these months.
With prolonged fasting, hunger sensations will arise. With this feeling of hunger, you may feel unhappy, remembering the reason for fasting and preparing your psychology for this situation will help you spend Ramadan more comfortably.
Be careful to break your fast slowly, chewing a lot and not forgetting your solid-liquid separation rules, along with being hungry and thirsty all day long.
What Should We Do at Iftar Time?
First, drink your water and wait for 10-15 minutes.
In order to meet your protein needs, consume protein group foods such as meat/chicken/fish/ meatballs/turkey after water.
After 30 minutes, try to drink plenty of water to make up for your water deficit instead of drinks such as tea and coffee.
In the meantime, consuming protein powder or protein milk as a snack will support you to get enough protein.
Sahur is very valuable for us to ensure that you spend the day in the best way. Do not fast without getting up for sahura. Eggs should be your primary food source to provide both protein requirements and satiety. It would be better to consume foods such as cheese and bread, which are higher in calories and nutritional value than tomatoes and cucumbers, for adequate nutrient intake. Do not take a short time for sahur. Continue drinking water by getting up early. Sharing the foods you consume with your dietician or doctor every 3-4 days will prevent inadequate nutrient and water intake. Do not fast unless your doctor or dietitian gives permission, remembering that your health is more precious in our religion.
